"As I see it, there are 2 poles in Champagne these days, let's call them the Intellectuals and the Hedonists. The Intellectuals are behind the Non-Dosage and single vineyard movement, wanting a sort of crystalline purity to their Champagne which speaks more to the mind than the heart. The Hedonists, of what I count myself one, want Champagne which is viscerally joyous, which takes one out of the head and into the body.

At the southern Montagne's most celebrated address, the grand cru brut sometimes gets forgotten next to the top wines and the more accessible entry range. In truth, based here on the 2020 vintage, it's the emblematic Egly style. It's almost imperious in its balance between restrained, pure raspberry and pear Pinot fruit, gentle Chardonnay brightness, deep but unobtrusive fruit concentration and glossy fresh nut and bitter almond complexity from lees and barrel ageing.
