Bonavita Faro 2013

Bonavita Faro 750ML 2013
Sku: 000000037753

The region of Faro lies in the northeastern most corner of Sicily, across the Stretto di Messina from Calabria on Italy’s mainland. Wines produced in this region are exclusively red, and made almost entirely from Nerello Mascalese and/or Nerello Cappucio – two grapes which have enjoyed some recent press due to the rising popularity of Etna Rosso. While you’ll find Etna and Faro wines will bear a similar Sicilian identity, their distinctive differences are worth noting. An additional local grape is grown in Faro, Nocero. In accordance with the DOC, winemakers may only use up to 10% Nocero in their wines, but even that splash of this late ripenening, low yielding grape adds a certain richness and depth of extraction that distinguish Faro from its neighbors. There’s also a strong and welcome sea breeze in Faro. Surrounded by seacoast, the vines in Faro get some relief from the Sicilian heat, an element which undoubtedly contributes to the particular elegance of these wines. Faro is mountain dominated, but unlike Etna there are multiple rolling hills which create a variety of mesoclimates throughout the region.

Bonavita sits just north of Messina, reaping the benefits of Faro’s mountainous, seaside terrain. Winemaker Giovanni Scarfone grew up across the strait in Calabria where he could see in the distance his future viticultural home. Scarfone farms a modest 2.5 hectares on the land that his family has owned for 100 years, all planted to indigenous grapes and treated organically. He is often lauded for the authenticity and precision of his wines.

“The 2013 Faro Superiore comes as a very pleasant surprise. Compared to the previous vintage, this wine shows a lot more precision and focus. It delivers crisp acidity with a clean and compact approach. More importantly, it feels very authentic and opens a pretty window onto the indigenous grapes (Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera) used in this tiny Sicilian appellation. The results are delicate and streamlined. My visit to Bonavita was one of my major delights in this year's trip to Sicily.”
