Dear Friends and Wine Lovers,
Spain Week Continues...
The more Spanish wine I taste the more I am impressed with the depth and maturity of the winemaking. Obscure wine regions are revitalizing their gnarly old vines
with modern vineyard practices and restoring their dirty cellars with the latest winemaking equipment. There are now 64 official wine areas (Denominations of Origin)
so it’s no longer just about Rioja and Tempranillo. One of the factors adding to the excitement is that experimentation is encouraged, so many cutting edge winemakers
are blending traditional Spanish grapes with classic French varietals.
Our "Wine of the Week", the
Gran Viu Selección 2001 from Cariñena is one of those blends, combining the local grapes Garnacha and
Tempranillo with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Maybe it’s the obscurity of the Cariñena region but the price to value ratio here is fantastic. I was knocked out with
the elegant structure, silky texture, black fruit, well integrated oak, soft tannins and long, long finish. I’ve recently stuck a few bottles in my Eurocave because I believe
this wine has serious aging potential.
