Dear Friends and Wine Lovers,
It's Syrah Week At Le Dû's Wines
This week we pay tribute to the great grape Syrah, with a pre-sell of two Jean-Michel Stephan single vineyard Côte Rôtie's, a terrific wine of the week and a free
Saturday tasting with top sommelier Scott Calvert... Another great week of wine at Le Dû's.
Wine of the Week
Jean-Michel Stephan, Côte-Rôtie
Single Vineyard Pre-Sell
We adore Northern Rhône Syrah and have written in this very newsletter about the 2003 vintage and how some winemakers believe they produced the most
concentrated and potentially long lived wines of their careers. The attention has focused mainly on the superstars like Guigal, Chapoutier and Chave, but the
miniscule production of their top, single vineyard wines combined with huge demand has resulted in astronomical prices.
Behind the clamor for the glamour producers are a younger generation of skilled and enthusiastic winemakers. We are particularly
excited about Jean-Michel Stephan who has been making serious Côte-Rôtie since 1994. Only 10% of his 800 case production makes it to the
United States, and a huge percentage of that has been sold through our shop. Peek into the personal cellars of Le Dû’s Wines employees and you will find the
Jean-Michel Stephan, Côte-Rôtie safely ensconced along with the Northern Rhône superstars.
We have just struck an exclusive deal to offer two of the Jean-Michel Stephan single vineyard Côte Rôties on a pre-sell basis.
These are unique and exciting wines from a winemaker we believe will be mentioned in the same breathe as Guigal, Chapoutier and Chave in the future.
The Côte-Rôtie Vieille Vigne en Coteaux 2003 has been made since the domaine's start in 1994. It contains
10 percent Viognier, along with Serine, the ancient variety of Syrah, sourced from a single 2.4 acre parcel of 104 year old vines. The grapes are destemmed and
vinified traditionally in vats before being being aged in old oak. The wine is very dark and racy with a long, firm, minerally finish... and for those who care, Robert Parker
gave it 94 points.
The other cuvée is the Côte-Rôtie Coteaux du Tupin 2003, which debuted with the 2000 vintage. It is made
from 100 percent Serine vines. The grapes are not destemmed, and undergo full carbonic maceration. The wine is then aged in 100 percent new oak. The Coteaux
du Tupin is gamy and brawny with lots of dark fruit and received 95 points from Mr. Parker.
