Dear Friends and Wine Lovers,

As we enter our second year it’s become quite evident that our customers expect us to uncover off-beat varietals with distinctive flavors from the world’s most obscure wine regions. The exhilaration of finding "off the beaten" path wines continues to excite us. We think you will enjoy our latest discoveries from Slovenia, an ancient wine making region located just west of Italy and south of Austria on the Adriatic Sea...

Only five cases of the Graben Sauvignon Blanc 2003 from the Bizelijsko-Sremic region made it into the country, and we have them. Don’t expect your lean, grassy Sancerre or your floral, citrus New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. This is a completely different animal. We were impressed with its full throttled, muscular flavors, but what do you expect with 15.99% alcohol and 7.6 grams of residual sugar. However, don’t expect a sweet wine as the sugar is balanced on the palate due to the high levels of alcohol and acid.

After Departures, the American Express magazine wrote about the Santomas Vintner’s Choice 2000, we sold a few dozen cases. It probably made us the number one shop for quality Slovenian wine in the country. The Santomas is a blend of 80% Refosco, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. It is definitely an old world wine with a charming rustic quality. French oak adds structure and vanilla to the black current fruit. Very small production of 250 cases makes this another “off the beaten path” winner.

Graben Sauvignon Blanc 2003 - $32.99
Santomas Vintner’s Choice 2000 - $39.99

We are offering one Graben and one Santomas with 5% off for $62.03
We are offering 10% off six packs of three Graben and three Santomas for $197.00

Italian Wine Extravaganza - Saturday, November 4th from 3-6pm
Marc de Grazia Tasting Featuring Piedmont Winemaker Cavallotto Fratelli

Italy Marc de Grazia has been importing fine Italian wines to the USA since 1980. His list of producers is a virtual who’s who of the greatest Italian growers. Join us this Saturday from as one of his top winemakers, Cavallotto Fratelli, pours us some of his finest Barolo’s.

We will also be showcasing wines from Marc de Grazia’s own estate, Terre Nere, located on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. You must try his “Guardiola”. The grapes are sourced from the highest red grape vineyard in all of Europe. And get this... a good percentage of these vines are pre-phylloxera and up to 200 years old... unbelievable!! That’s why Robert Parker called his wines "a revelation".

Folks, it doesn’t stop there... we will also be pouring these Italian classics...

Ciacci Piccolomini - Pianrosso Brunello di Montalcino 2001
Elio Altare - Barbera d'Alba 2004
Livio Sassetti - Rosso di Montalcino 2004
Palazzino La Pieve - Chianti Classico 2003
Dei - Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva 1999

Chocolate and Dessert Wine Seminar - Friday, November 3rd - $25
Featuring James Beard Pastry Chef of the Year, Jacques Torres
With James Beard Sommelier of the Year, Jean-Luc Le Dû

Jaques Torres Friends, it doesn’t get better than this... an unforgettable sit down seminar pairing the world’s greatest chocolate with the most sinful dessert wines. Our special guest, Jacques Torres, has a long and esteemed resume. Besides winning the James Beard Pastry Chef of the Year, he was named one of Chocolatier Magazine's 10 Best Pastry Chefs, he has hosted his own television series "Chocolate with Jacques Torres" on the Food Network and served kings and presidents as the pastry chef at le Cirque.

His greatest tribute is probably winning the "Meilleur Ouvrier de France", an association of the best craftsmen of France with the aim of promoting the work of the best artisans in the country. Among their accomplishments: repairing the crystal dome protecting the Qaâba (The Holy Black Rock) in Mecca and the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in NYC. It is an honor to have this master craftsman in our store.

Currently he can be found at Jacques Torres Chocolate (350 Hudson Street, around the corner from our shop) where he magically transforms cocoa beans into the most wicked chocolate you have ever tasted.

Our very own Jean-Luc Le Dû has been sampling Jacques’s chocolates in a quest to find the perfect pairings for his favorite dessert wines. The results will be available for your perusal on November 3rd.

We will be offering two seminars - one at 6:30pm and one at 7:30pm. Seating is limited and reservations are required. The price is $25

To reserve a seat, please e-mail Andy or call 212-924-6999.
