Dear Friends and Wine Lovers,
The hill of Hermitage in the Northern Rhone - home to the world’s greatest Syrah - is owned mostly by large negociant firms. There exist only a
few small growers with plots there and Jean-Michael Sorrel is one of them.
For lovers of Hermitage, Jean-Michael Sorrel needs little introduction as he is the son of Henri Sorrel, and
brother of Marc Sorrel. When Henri Sorrel died, his land was divided up between the sons. Jean-Michael kept only three acres but they
include two of the finest vineyards on that esteemed hill, Le Méal and Les Greffieux.
Jean-Michael Sorrel is one of the finest sources of artisanal, traditionally-made Hermitage. His style is
unquestionably old-school, 70 year old vines, extremely low yield, no de-stemming and long maceration in wood vats, so his wines showcase
Syrah’s fleshy, gamey, bloody side. Dark purple in the glass and undeniably ripe and meaty on the nose, Syrah fans and Northern Rhône nuts
love his wine's undeniable terroir expression.
Robert Parker gave the 2003 Northern Rhone vintage an astounding 96 points writing, “some producers … believe
they may have produced the most prodigious wines of their lives … astonishingly concentrated yet accessible”. The Wine Spectator concurred,
gracing it with 94 points.
Traditionally Hermitage is backward and tannic when young but after opening a bottle in the store we can vouch
that the 2003 vintage is just the opposite, delivering rich, full bodied flavors that are accessible on release. However if you have the foresight
(and self control) to cellar a case, over time, some absolutely remarkable, deep, complex, sauvage flavors will emerge.
The J.M.B. Sorrel Hermitage, 2003 is an elegant, textured wine, a future classic from a world class
winemaker. Keep in mind, Jean-Michael works only three acres of vines, production is extremely limited.
