Dear Friends and Wine Lovers,
Fifth generation winemaker Frédéric Magnien is a bona-fide star of the Côtes de Nuits. Though he owns no vineyards, he has built a network of top quality growers in
Morey-St-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Chambolle-Musigny. Technically that makes him a négociant, except unlike most négociants who simply buy juice or specify yield
requirements to their growers, Frédéric handles all the vineyard work himself, using the skills he learned from his father Michel Magnien, who was vineyard manager for
powerhouse Burgundy négociant-éléveur Maison Louis Latour. His routine involves strict pruning, careful sorting of grapes, wine transferred by gravity and no racking... fining
and filtration are out of the question. He only uses the highest-grade François Frères oak, aged three years, which is allocated to the most exclusive estates such as Domaine
de la Romanée-Conti and Comtes de Lafon.
In average years Frédéric’s wines seduce us with layers of deeply concentrated, lush, sweet fruit. In an extraordinary year like 2005, which
Allan Meadows from Burghound has described as "...the best top to bottom vintage that I have ever seen", Frédéric enters Burgundy nirvana! The results speak
for themselves. Here's what we are offering...

The Best of the Northern Rhône
Thursday, July 12th from 6-8pm
Join us this Thursday as we welcome Liz Willette for the first in our series of "Beat The Heat" summer tastings. It will be an exciting start as we focus on
two of the best second generation winemakers in the northern Rhône, Jean-Louis Chave and Franck Balthazar. Jean-Louis Chave, the son of Gerard Chave, needs no
introduction as his Hermitage is Syrah perfection and one of the world's most beloved wines. Franck Balthazar is the nephew of 90 year old Noel Verset, the recently retired
producer of benchmark Cornas. Franck has inherited half of his stellar, 90 year old vineyard parcels, some of the greatest Syrah sites in the world. This is a fun lineup...
J.L. Chave - Côtes Du Rhone "Mon Coeur" 2005
J.L. Chave - St. Joseph "Offerus" 2004
Franck Balthazar - Cornas "Chaillots" 2005
And as a bonus, a fresh, juicy rosé from Provence...
Château de l'Escarelle Rosé 2006 - Grenache/Cinsault/Syrah/Cabernet Sauvignon
We hope to see you here...
